Q1: What are the minimum requirements to take up a loan?
  • At least 21 years old.
  • Singaporean/PRs/S Pass/E Pass.
  • Full time employment or self employed.
  • Identity Card (only original accepted, no photocopies).
Q2: How much can I borrow?

For unsecured loans, please refer to the table below for the total maximum amount that you may borrow at any time across all moneylenders in Singapore:

Q3: What are the interest rates like and are there any other charges?

With effect from 1 October 2015, all moneylenders are only permitted to impose the following charges and expenses:

  • a fee not exceeding $60 for each month of late repayment
  • a fee not exceeding 10% of the principal of the loan when a loan is granted and
  • legal costs ordered by the court for a successful claim by the moneylender for the recovery of the loan.

Q6: How long does it take for loan approval?

It can take as fast as 20 minutes – provided all required documents are in order.

Q6: What should I take note after signing the loan contract?
  • Make sure that the correct principal amount of the loan is printed on the contract.
  • Pay the loan instalments on time to avoid incurring late payment fees and late interest.
  • Make sure that the receipt is dated and signed every time you repay your loan or pay any fees in cash, and check it for correctness (e.g. name, amount, date).
  • Make sure you receive a statement of account for all your loan(s) at least once every 6 months, and check it for correctness (e.g. name, amount, date); and
  • You should retain all statement of accounts and receipts of payments, as documentation and evidence of payments.
  • A copy of the contract is printed and given to you.
Q7: How to know if your moneylender is licensed or not?
  • All loan contracts must be signed face-to-face in the approved office by the Ministry of Law Singapore.
  • We do not use abusive language, or behave in a threatening manner towards you.
  • We do not request for your SingPass user ID and/or password through the phone.
  • We do not retain your NRIC card or any other personal ID documents (e.g. driver’s licence, passport,work permit, employment pass or ATM card).
  • Check the Registry of Moneylenders. You can download a list of licensed moneylenders
Q8: How do I know if the advertisements are from a licensed or an unlicensed moneylender?

Licensed moneylenders are permitted to advertise only through these three channels:

(a) business or consumer directories (in print or online media).

(b) websites belonging to the moneylender; and

(c) advertisements placed within or on the exterior of the moneylender’s business premises.

All other channels are prohibited.

If you receive flyers, SMSes, emails or other forms of advertisements which are not permitted, these would either be from licensed moneylenders operating in breach of the advertising restrictions, or from unlicensed moneylenders.

Hence, you are advised not to respond to such advertisements. Instead, you should report the advertisements by providing the Min Law’s officer with a proof of the advertisements (for SMS – a screen capture) to the Registry at e-mail address: OneMinLaw@mlaw.gov.sg or to the Police.
